This is primary school project which began with a simple idea to enliven the entrance area of the primary school to welcome pupils and parents to the school.
Ballymoney Model Controlled Integrated Primary School (to give it it’s full title!) is one of the largest primary schools in Ballymoney. It attracts pupils from the town and surrounding countryside. About 300 children attend the school.
Ideas for the mosaic came from the local setting, the River Bann, older buildings in the town and the countryside. Four panels were devised for the two pillars at the front of the school.
All 300 children took part in creating ideas and drawings for the panels and around 50 children created the clay pieces which were then fired and incorporated into each panel alongside small mosaic tiles.
For this mosaic I worked with various groups of children and teachers over a two week period and created a site specific artwork on a tight budget.
